I'm looking to either repair my existing turntable ($10 garage sale direct drive Pioneer PL-670) or get a new (used) one for a reasonable price. So, I'm curious what turntable you all have? Did you get it used/new? Have you ever gotten it repaired or done it yourself? Did you have to buy a new cartridge? I'm reading some of these Audiophile forums and it really seems like you can spend a fortune on this stuff. I just want to listen to my Mt Eerie records and it to sound okay, but if I have to buy a new cartridge every few years, I might just buy an ipod

I bought my Technics SL-D303 off Ebay for 20 bucks. The actual device is in pretty good shape, but the plastic covering has a crack in it after one of my shelves unfortunately fell on it.
I did have to buy a new cartridge for it (which was more expensive than the turntable), as well as a pre-amp so that I could play it through my PC speakers. Overall I spent about 60 dollars, which I guess isn't too bad.

I have a Sony PSLX250H turntable and I highly recommend to anyone looking for a turntable under $100. I think I got it for $80 new but I'm not sure. The set up was very simple and it plays great. I have it hooked up to these huge 30 year old JBL speakers and the sound is unreal.
It doesn't have a usb cable hook up like more expensive models, and oddly enough it doesn't have an off button either so I just unplug it when I'm done listening which admittedly is a hassle. The nice thing though is that it is fully automatic so you don't have to lift and lower the needle which I've always been bad at.

I ended up getting a Hitachi HT-45 (direct drive) from a friendly and knowledgeable guy on Craigslist. I'm glad I went the personal route, because now I actually know how to balance the arm and set the anti-skating force ( www.sound-smith.com/faq/balancefaq.html). Now I'm remembering how damn good the "In the World" split 7" with Love of Everything is...it had been too long since I listened to that.
