I just ran into this report on reddit about some of the concerts a couple of months ago. It talks about some of the new songs, which sound like they are both harrowing and funny:
"The new songs are lyrically driven, still revolving around the still-fresh fallout of loss and single fatherhood. High context, detailed and unrelenting, they reveal life in the shadow of grief as the writer returns to touring and the new routines of lonely domesticity. Here’s a taste of what he sings about (WARNING: These are definitely spoilers so if you want to keep the album a complete surprise you should skip this part):
One of the most memorable new songs is about playing FORM 2017 at Arcosanti. It’s about how the absurdities of life can coexist with grief. In the song Phil talks about hanging out backstage with Weyes Blood and Father John Misty and having a mental crisis while leaning on Skrillex’s tour bus. It’s funny and there was lots of laughter. Also Phil Elverum hanging out with Weyes Blood and FJM sounds the setup for an Indieheads joke.
One song used the painting Priseld (1915) by Nikolai Astrup to talk about grief and loss. He talked about seeing himself in the pregnant woman in the right of the painting, as she has clearly lost someone.
There’s another song about Genevieve’s cremated remains returning to the surface in the yard because he didn’t bury them deep enough. Phil recognises her finger bone and talks about how it used to caress him, and what could have been a fragment of her skull. This line made the audience very uncomfortable for obvious reasons. In the song he then returns to the chair that he placed on the mountain to spread her ashes on. He finds her remains among a bunch of animal bones that coyotes have gathered.
Phil sings about how he and Genevieve first met, which was a real moment of indelible sweetness in an otherwise relentlessly harrowing set. I think that’s in “Distortion” which is on Youtube. There’s also a hidden Jack Kerouac pun that I thought was hilarious. In general these new songs had quite a few moments of wry humour.
Another song uses the imagery of dying in a plane crash and somebody finding his phone and looking at the last photo he took, which was of his daughter."
