Hi all, I am trying to slowly build up my home recording setup, and I'm on to microphone selection. Thus far I've only been able to afford SM-57s and below, but I've saved up some money and am ready to graduate to a better microphone. Can anyone recommend a good microphone? Capacitor? Dynamic? I don't know? thanks!

transistorrhythm do you have any sound exemple where you used that particular microphone? seems to be interesting.

ultimately, depends what you're gonna look to use it for. there's no 1 go-to answer. are you looking to do guitar? vocals? horns? drums? each have their own frequency issues that will heavily affect choice. really what you are looking to get out of it will also play a big role. are we talking loud rockin' music? acoustic? ultimately, that will dictate your selection of condenser (and specifically diaphragm size), dynamic, ribbon, etc.
as far as a great all around low price versatile beast, i'm a fan of the rodes nt2a. i've used it on drums, guitars, vox, strings, cabs, to rather surprising results considering the price tag. though, it should be said though that mic pre selection is infinitely more important, as a a vintage Jfet thru a shitty pre will sound no better than a radio shack mic thru a decent one. what is your backline looking to be?
lastly, do not disrespect the 57. most versatile mic by far with an incredible cost/worth benefit thru the roof. still used in pretty much every session i've ran in the last 10 years. great for close micing cabs, snares, pretty much anything with high SPLs.

thanks! i've heard some good stuff about the rodes nt2a from friends. i guess i'd be doing more stuff on the quiet, "folk" side of things. guitar and voice being the predominant features of the music.
