hi everyone, haven’t been here in years. saw something today that piqued my interest and wanted somewhere to discuss it. Phil did a lil thing with pitchfork pitchfork.com/thepitch/phil-elverum-mount-eerie-the-microphones-on-the-song-he-wishes-he-wrote/he also wrote an (beautiful) accompanying essay about the song and AO. the part that stood out to me was the aside about pitchforks review of the adrian orange and her band album, and the negative effects it had on Adrians mental health. i never put two and two together on this before and it basically floored me, super depressing imo. i did appreciate how phil used the p4k platform to call them out and champion an amazing song off an album that deserved better. from an artist that deserved better. anyways just wondering what other people thouht of this.

Yeah, I really appreciated that. Being told you can't sing by the tastemakers would rattle anyone...can't imagine how much that must have messed Adrian up at the time. Pitchfork is still kind of a kingmaker today but back in 2007, they were even more so. That reviewer in particular, David Raposa, has some pretty brutal reviews under his belt that have not aged well at all. A.A. Bondy, Dr. Dog, Adrian...these are all classics now, proving once and for all that those who can't create, critique.
I always thought it would be cool if Pitchfork had a segment called "We Got it Wrong" where they go back and right past mistakes.

Oh man, I totally forgot about the terrible review of this "Adrian Orange & Her Band" album on Pitchfork. It's cool that Phil is still plugging Adrian. I think they were big influences on each other. Pitchfork totally got it wrong and that album rips.

I always thought it would be cool if Pitchfork had a segment called "We Got it Wrong" where they go back and right past mistakes. 1) that's genius and would be worth reading 2) Just to join the choir here, that album is a total classic.
